PreCare Premier®
contains 1 mg of folic acid to protect the health of the
developing baby. Only folic acid has been
clinically proven to reduce neural
tube defects (NTDs)— and its effect is dose related. (9-21) |
Some prenatal
vitamins (even prescription prenatal vitamins) contain only 0.4 mg of folic
acid.
(22, 23) This is 60% less than the 1.0 mg of folic acid contained in PreCare®.
Be sure to check
the label for 1 mg folic acid. Other folate sources are neither proven nor
tested in pregnant
women. (19)
|
The benefits of
folic acid are dose related. A recent article in the prestigious New England
Journal of Medicine reported that 1 mg folic acid provides an estimated 57% risk
reduction against
neural tube defects (NTDs) compared to only an estimated 36% risk reduction with
0.4 mg.
(21) |
No clinical trial on
the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) with other folate sources
has been conducted. (19) |
Women with a folic
acid enzyme mutation can metabolize folic acid, although at a slower
rate, which makes a full 1 mg of folic acid important for all women. (25) |
